When it comes to picking the right Sunscreen products, I find some that are sticky, oily or others that leave a whitish layer… So we are here with our guide to help you choose the right sunscreen for you. We have all heard how important it is to choose a sunscreen with the right Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Did you know that when it comes to choosing the right one, it’s not just the range of SPF, but your activity, your skin type and even your skin color that matter.

Why you should use a sunscreen?

The sun rays are primarily comprised of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays (or aging rays) can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, and can pass through window glass. While, UVB rays (or burning rays) are the primary cause of sunburn and are blocked by window glass. SPF or the Sun Protection Factor in sunscreen helps protect the skin from medical conditions like skin cancer and prevent the skin from ageing, pigmentation and discoloration.

So how to determine the correct sunscreen?

1. Skin Type

While opting for the right sunblock, remember, higher the range of the SPF, the more oily the formulation.

Normal skin : Those blessed with normal skin are free to choose from a variety! You can opt for a cream or lotion based sunblock. In case of oiliness, dab with a tissue to remove the excess oil.

Oily skin: Oily skin is one of the most problematic skin types when it comes to choosing the right sunscreen. Your skin tends to become oilier during summers, thus its important to select a sunscreen that is gel or water based that has a drying effect and does not make the skin look greasy.

Dry skin: Dry skin can be prone to sensitivity. A creamy or moisturising SPF is the best choice for dry skin.
For the sensitivity use the Malibu After Sun gel with Aloe Vera. This is perfect for my normal to dry fair skin, that is often prone to getting sunburnt. With a gentle cooling formula it provides immediate relief to skin that has been over exposed to the sun.

2. Skin Colour

Sunscreen should be chosen according to the skin colour.

Dark Skin: Girls with that chocolate skin tan easily while rarely burning, and may feel they do not need to use sunscreen. However, like sunburn, a tan is the result of DNA damage from exposure to the sun’s harmful UV radiation. Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15+.

Fairer Skin: Girls, if you are fair then a sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ is recommended for extra protection. You can also opt for sunblocks with higher SPF.

3. Selecting the SPF

Its a common belief that the higher the SPF, the better it is for your skin. But it couldn’t be further from the truth. If you choose a higher SPF product (for example 50+), it can make your skin extremely oily and can also cause discomfort. An SPF of 15 to 30++ is considered the best for the Indian summers, and blocks 97 percent of the sun’s UVB rays. Your sunscreen should have broad spectrum protection, to effectively protect against significant portions of both the UVA and UVB ranges of the light spectrum. It is also important to remember that high-number SPFs last the same amount of time as low-number SPFs. A high-number SPF does not allow you to spend additional time outdoors without reapplication. All sunscreens should be applied approximately every two hours.

4. How and When to Apply

It is advisable to apply a sunscreen at least 15-20 minutes before going outside to allow the drying time on all exposed body areas. Re-apply every 2 hours when exposed to the sun in general. When out on a beach, it is advisable to re-apply sunscreen every 30 minutes. Wash or wipe off the area with a wet tissue before re-applying. If you are swimming or indulging in activities that make you sweat profusely, you need a waterproof sunscreen. In case you are in the sun for longer duration, then you may choose an SPF that has a higher denomination (50++ and above).

Other parts of your body, specially your lips and hair may also need specific products.

Your hair can become dry and frizzy with sun exposure. Keep your hair healthy by applying UV-shielding products on your hair. Buy Malibu Hair and Scalp Protector SPF 30+.

The skin on your lips is much more delicate and thinner than the skin on your face. Using a lip balm of SPF 30+ will prevent darkening and peeling of the skin over the lips.
